Facebook interaction should be an integral part of your online branding routine, but it must be interesting for your audience. Don’t just say the same things over and over again, even if you are putting it into different words. Otherwise, your audience will switch off or flick to another channel, if they are being bombarded by repetitious advertising and self promotion.
So here’s some ideas to help create some interest when posting on your Facebook page:
1. Interview a star
Interview someone important or relevant to your brand, from within the company, or someone associated with your business or even a client who buys your products or services.
Video record the interview if possible, then have upload to your Google YouTube account. Post a link or upload the video to your Facebook page, with a comment like “Check out our interview with….”
If you are unable to video the interview, then take written notes. Or if you have asked questions via email, then consider posting the written conversation to your blog, include some photos, and then link to it on your Facebook page.
2. Talk about your website or blog
If you have some valuable information on your website that you wish to share on your Facebook page, then write a short excerpt on Facebook and then link to the rest of the article.
This could be a way of following up on a comment or a question that’s been posted on your Facebook wall.
3. Link to other tabs
If you have other tabs of interest on your Facebook page such as polls, promotions, photos, etc., then consider posting a link to the other tabs.
4. Have a laugh
Upload a funny video (must be relevant to your business or brand) to your YouTube page, then link to it on Facebook.
5. Talk about talking
Link to a podcast on your website, or another website that is relevant to your business (probably not a competitor though).
6. Ask the audience
Thinking of adding a product or service to your current inventory, then post photos and info to Facebook, then ask your audience to choose their preference.
7. Fill in the blanks
Try a “fill in the blanks” post. For e.g. if you sell clothes then post “my favourite item of clothing from insert your business name is ________” and ask your audience to fill in the blank.
You could take this one a step further and ask people to add pictures of themselves wearing that item of clothing.
8. Make it current
Post something that is related to a current event, or season, or upcoming festivities. E.g., “looking for great ideas for Santa stockings, have you seen our ___________” , or “Winter’s just around the corner so don’t forget to get our __________ so you don’t get stuck out in the cold.”
Don’t forget to add a link back to your website page.
9. Run a promotion
Create a promotion on your website, and then mention and link to it on Facebook. Or consider using a Facebook app service to create a coupon, or a competition.
10. Engage feedback
Ask your audience what they would like to see in your product range, or some feedback on a new service or product.
If the response is positive then this is some great free advertising for you, as word of mouth is by far the best.
If the response is negative then this is your opportunity to find out what someone didn’t like and why.
11. Test their IQ
Post a quiz about one of your products and ask a short series of questions to see if your audience knows the answer. You could increase the interest in this post by adding that there will be a special bonus for all who respond on Facebook, or a giveaway announced at the end of the questions, etc.
12. Use the Facebook question feature
Run a poll to get some feedback and to create interest in a particular range of products or service. Facebook has a simple question feature to have you up and running with a simple poll in no time.
13. “How to” guide
Write a short explanation on how to do something. Or upload a video guide, or link to a manuals page.
14 Turn your readers into celebrities
Why not create some interest by posting photos of someone using your product or service- ask for their permission first- otherwise let them post their own photos on your wall.
15 Run an event
That’s run an event, as in creating an event for your followers and customers, so that they can try out new products or services. Create a buzz around the event, and then post photos and a “round-up” of the how the day went.
Of course you could also run an event, as in have a fun run, or join/make a group and enter one. That’s if you are the fitness type…
16 Celebrate a milestone
Once you reach a milestone, thank everyone and offer a freebie to all fans. The mileston might be an anniversary, or a new store, or even just reaching a particular number of fans.
17 Create a #30daychallenge
Start a 30 day challenge. Simply choose a theme and post the information on Facebook, Twitter, your blog, etc. For e.g. if your business is beauty, then the challenge might be to try out 30 different tips to improving your skin. Each day you would post a new tip and encourage fans to participate in the challenge. At the end of the challenge you would ask people to upload some pictures and talk about how they went.
It doesn’t have to 30 days, it could be more or less.
18 Start a discussion with your community
Kick-start a discussion amongst your audience by asking an open question to engage people in the comments. For e.g.. “If you could only take 3 skin products away on a holiday what would they be?” or “If you had $500 to spend on your health, what would you buy?”
Obviously you would structure your questions to be of some relevance to your business and your brand.
19 Don’t break the rules
Facebook is wonderful to use for promoting your business, but make sure you check the Facebook rules for running promotions.
20 Start here
Check out some the basics page for using Facebook- a good place to start when you are looking for an answer to something on Facebook.
21 Ask
Don’t forget to sometimes ask people to share your page posts with their friends, by suggesting that they click on the share button. Although it may sound unnecessary, people don’t always know how to do this. Also the simple action of asking for people to share/ recommend you is often a good reminder for people.
22 Network by status tagging
Something new and cool on Facebook is status tagging. I haven’t actually tried this one out yet but when you are posting on Facebook, you can tag any page or person by entering a @ sign in front of the name that you want to tag.
23 Set your Facebook page name
When you first start up your Facebook page the URL address that Facebook allocates to you, includes your business name and a whole long series of numbers. It’ll be easier for you to promote your page, and also for others to find your page, if you set a custom URL that matches up with your business/ brand name. Go to Facebook.com/username to create a custom URL for your page.
A couple of things to note: (1) Remember that this cannot be changed once it is set, so choose carefully and wisely, and (2) try to maintain consistent branding for website, Facebook, twitter, blog, and other social media.
Well that should give you some ammo to start firing up your Facebook posts. Let me know how you go in the comments, and if you’ve got some other great tips feel free to share with us.
